I am constantly thrilled and excited to discover the creativity in this city! I was wandering in the bustling, up and coming quartier of Little Burgundy this past weekend, and I found some great stores and met some very innovative people!
The window of Surface Jalouse reminded me of an Art gallery. I was drawn to the graphic “Pop” Art images that I saw on a sofa, of all things. I absolutely had to go in and investigate further…
I spoke to Antoine and met Héloïse, two of the three Montréal designers who own this amazing concept boutique (only Jean-Charles was missing!) I have always been a David Bowie fan, so the chair covered with his image had to be my favorite piece, or so I thought. As I saw more, it became harder to be certain – I loved so many things. There was also a stunning chair recovered with Elvis and an original line of handmade zombie dolls made specifically for the store by local designer, Lula Sailor.
Surface Jalouse was created five years ago when Antoine and his friends since high-school, all with families, became frustrated by the lack of personality and choice available on the home décor market. They didn’t want to have the exact same living room or dining room as everyone else, which is just what they were seeing. It was then that they saw a need for creative and unique designs for the home.
To say that they re-upholster furniture is much more than an understatement. They design one-of-a-kind customized works of Art for your home. If you bring them an image that you want to see on your chair, couch, blinds, stool, pillows or anything at all, they will deconstruct the piece, create the graphic of your preferred print, and re-construct the piece in their atelier, on the premises. They can work on most surfaces, including wood, leather, leatherette, plexi-glass and fabric. If you’re not sure, they can certainly suggest some great ideas and help guide you. Although the shock value of their work just might be what attracts you, they can certainly do more classic custom work – anything you can imagine!
The boutique is set up like a gallery, very sparse but for the eye-popping oeuvres. The room in the back of the store is incroyable! It was “tagged” by well-known street artist, Z, and there is a glamorous sofa covered with dark images of Marilyn Manson, a collaboration between the artist and Surface Jalouse.
The pieces are sophisticated but very Rock n’ Roll and cutting edge at the same time. It may not be for everyone, but this is the place if you want a very personalized and unique approach to home décor!
Merci Antoine, Héloïse et Jean-Charles!
